Sale of Treasures from the Holy Land
Volunteers from the Roman Catholic Church in Bethlehem will be visiting St. Alphonsus Church and selling religious items from the Holy Land on the weekend of August 31 - September 1, 2019 in the Gather Space.
The majority of Christian families in the Holy Land made their day-to-day living by selling their hand-carved religious items to pilgrims and tourists coming to the Church of the Nativity and other religious and historical sites. With the hostilities in the Holy Land and the lack of Christian pilgrims, the traditional workshops of Olivewood have sustained severe damage, and unemployment has reached almost 95 percent.
Some Christian Palestinians have responded by fleeing from the Holy Land. The absence of a living Christian community is very dangerous for the Church of the Nativity, the birthplace of Jesus.
This sale is to strengthen the Christian presence and support the 600 Christian families who live in the city of Bethlehem and the surrounding areas. All products are made in the Holy Land, and all proceeds go directly to these families, the artisans who work in tourism-related hand-carvings. Buying one piece will help prevent Christians from having to leave the Holy Land.
